Have you ever had a daunting project just LOOM over you for a considerable length of time? Mostly because you didn’t just hit it head on, but rather, prolong, procrastinate, and pro-just-not-do-it…? Well, shamefully, I am guilty of that from time to time.
Some “reasons” I may claim are:
- Not enough time
- Not knowledgeable enough in that field
- Not a high-enough priority
But in reality, my reasons are actually excuses, allowing me to claim:
- Too busy
- Too dumb
- Too lax
Are these really the labels I wish to have assigned to me? That would be an emphatic H-E-double hockey-stick NO! So why do I allow myself to even partially fall into any of these categories? Especially when, quite often, I wind up spending more time determining why I cannot accomplish such-and-such, then what it would take to just shut up and actually DO the project.
Case in point: I have been wanting now, for several months, to do an overhaul on my showerhead. A little background for ya – Hubby and I finally bought a cute little house in a quiet part of town, from a sweet little lady. And I do mean little. I’m not sure if she is even five feet tall, though I most certainly will not hold that over her. When she first bought this place several years back, it was apparently in dire need of repair, so she did a complete remodel, to include installing those special hurricane brackets, which I shall be forever thankful for. So everything in her bathroom was designed just for her, to include the shower head install at right about chin-level on me.
At first I convinced myself to just go with it. You know, doing the limbo every night could be good on my abs, right? Then I realized she had rigged a secondary line off the primary, to house a hand-held piece to spray down the walls with. So I borrowed an idea from my Big Brother (thank you, Jeff!), and put a few 3M Command hooks way up further, then used some of those rubberized twisty-tie things from Lowes to not only hook it, but also balance it just-so off the ceiling.
This worked for a couple more months, until I became increasingly agitated by the fact that now my shower head was smack-dab in the middle of my shower, leaving me no space out of the water to actually soap up or shampoo.
After mentioning it to some of the guys at work, I learned there are ways to put an extension line upward, and remount a showerhead more to the height of my choosing. Who knew?!? So off to Lowes I went, where I wound up buying four different kits, as I wanted to be fully ready to just knock this out of the park once and for all. I even told the gal when I was cashing out at the register, “Clearly I don’t know what I’m doing, I’m just getting ready for whatever…” She smiled; I’m sure she hears that a lot in her line of work.
So yesterday became my “do or die” day. I was gonna finish this project FINALLY, no matter what. So, after a thorough scrub, I began the demo. After lining up my four options, looking them over and sizing up the space I was working with, I chose a Delta 10-inch-arm unit, and diligently began reading the instructions after breaking open the package. To my dismay, I did not purchase something called plumber tape on that original trip. I mean, if I needed that, wouldn’t it be safe to assume it would be included in the kit? Well, you know what they say about the word “assume…”
Guess who made another trip to her favorite Lowes? Apparently God figured I needed a break.
And this time of year, it was getting dark by the time I got back home, so I had to turn on all the bathroom lights to finish. But oh boy – finish I did! And guess what? I had the best-ever, most relaxing, incredibly delightful shower ever last night, standing UNDER my pretty new shower head!
So, moral of the story – next time you’re facing something slightly out of your comfort zone, take a step back, maybe conduct an RA (Risk Assessment), get a bigger picture, and then GO FOR IT!
I realize that teamwork can make the dream work, but sometimes, it just feels really good to DO IT ALL BY MYSELF.
